Is Financial Advice Really for Everyone?

BBC ONE

About this film

Most of us are comfortable going to a GP when we’re not feeling ourselves, or speaking to a mechanic when our cars break down. But when we encounter questions or concerns about our money, very few Brits turn to a financial adviser for help.

Iona Bain travelled to Darlington to find out how a new generation of experts are trying to make financial advice as accessible as a trip to the doctors

According to the Money and Pensions Service, just under half of us don’t feel confident managing our money day to day. But, perhaps surprisingly, only 9% of people go to a professional for advice on their finances.

Instead we’ll try everything from online influencers to asking friends and family for help before we speak to an expert.

So we sent three members of the public speed dating with financial experts to see whether a little specialist guidance could make a lot of difference.
