Blood Bikers:
Britain’s unseen emergency service.
BBC ONE
About this film
Space is at a premium in hospitals in the UK.
So only a limited supply of medical essentials, like blood can be kept on site.
But demand can change in an instant.
And when it does, the call goes out for an urgent delivery…
Every year the NHS collects almost 1.5 million units of blood from donors in cosy village halls, mosques and football stadiums across the country.
But getting those donations is just one part of a complex puzzle that sees that vital supplies reach those in urgent need.
In the middle of the night, up and down the country, a volunteer squad of bikers are providing an unseen emergency service to the NHS. Blood Bikers deliver everything from cancer medications and donated breastmilk to specialist surgical equipment and blood to hospitals and air ambulances, often for immediate use in lifesaving treatments.
