NORTH EAST SATELLITE APPLICATIONS CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

Satellites built in Team Valley. Components for the Mars Rover crafted in Newcastle City Centre. Rocket parts travelling to the moons of Jupiter (actual Jupiter!) shaped on Scotswood Road.

Our brief was to create a series of films capturing a snapshot of the emerging space technology sector in the North East - where it’s at today, and where it’s heading.

About this film

When we started working with the North East Satellite Applications Centre of Excellence the brief was to help showcase the region’s growing capability in this ultra competitive field.

But it was also one of public engagement - reaching potential collaborators, companies with complementary processes or technologies. As well as attracting prospective talent, from college and uni grads to mid-career creative thinkers looking for a change.

We started our research, diving deep enough into the science to confidently interview companies about their work. To tell their story we didn’t necessarily need to know exactly how their technology worked as much as we needed to understand the problems they were solving, what made their approach interesting and the context of their impact.

As we began sketching out a vision for the film, we understood that whilst the calibre of the science mattered, the emotional tone was equally important. We needed to draw out the sense of purpose that drives this industry, so that the audience aren’t just left impressed, but inspired too.

So we wrote a short introductory voiceover script that aimed to give the burgeoning space sector in the North East context - showing a sense of natural progression from old industry to new, but with that same boundary-pushing, horizon-seeking DNA.
